Appetizer

Several types of cheeses, vegetable spreads and cold cuts are typically on offer.

Soup

Select from ‘Ciorba de perisoare' or meatball soup, ‘ciorba taraneasca' or vegetable soup, with or without meat, and ‘ciorba de burta' or tripe soup.

Fish

Take your pick from saramura or grilled carp in brine, scrumbie la gratar or grilled herring and nisetru la gratar or grilled Black Sea sturgeon.

Entree

Popular dishes include Tocanita or tochitura, which is a meat stew that is seasoned with onions and spices; ghiveci, which is about 20 vegetables cooked together in oil; sarmale or pickled cabbage leaves that are stuffed with minced meat, rice and spice; and mititei, also called "Wee Ones", which are small skinless grilled sausages.

Dessert

Romania is known for its rich desserts, such as papanasi - doughnuts made of cottage cheese that are topped with fruit preserve and sour cream; clatite cu branza - crepes filled with raisins, cottage cheese and spices; and cozonac, a traditional holiday sweetbread filled with poppy seeds, walnuts or cream cheese.

Drink

The traditional Romanian drink, taken with appetizers, is ‘tuica', which is a rather potent plum brandy and varies in dryness, bouquet and strength depending on the area where it is produced.

Romania produces a large amount of wine and is one of the world's leaders in wine production, though much of its wine is consumed internally. No matter where in Romania you are travelling, whether along the Black Sea coast or the Dorbrudja Plateau in the Danube Delta, the Moldova province, the Carpathian Mountains, Transylvania, Wallachia or any other agricultural area, you're always in wine country in Romania.

Where to Eat

Red Lion café, located in the Universitatii area, has a good atmosphere, modest prices and excellent pizza.

Le Berbecu' is quite a small place, located on the way to the Nicoresti, and offers superb polenta, palinca and tuica, excellent grills of fish and pork and is known for quick service. Its small terrace is a great place on summer nights and its first floor is perfect for winter. Le Berbecu' also excels in beans, smoked ciolan and carnati de casa or home-made sausages. Its mujdei or fresh garlic sauce is renowned as the best in Bucharest and is the perfect accompaniment to carp or chicken steak.

Burebista, located opposite the US embassy and near the National Theatre, is for all those who love game meats. The restaurant offers a variety of meat, such as wild boar, bear and venison, and is moderately priced.

The Serb's Tavern

Located close Herastrau Park, the Serbian's Den or Taverna Sarbului has a good variety of food from Eastern Europe, including meat-based meals as well as local varieties of food commonly available in Bucharest. The wines at The Serb's Tavern are excellent. The house wine and many famous wines from around the world are a great accompaniment to the food.

La Mama serves Romanian food and is one of the popular restaurants in Bucharest. While the food is good, it has a menu that is quite similar to other restaurants serving Romanian food. Its low prices and large servings make it popular. There are four branches of La Mama in Bucharest.
